The Manual Manual

IKEA is the undisputed champion of do-it-yourself living.

From flat-pack furniture to that unmistakable hex key, IKEA has built a legacy around DIY ease. But this April Fools’, we turned their most trusted tool—the instruction manual—into the ultimate puzzle. The result? Confusion never looked so Swedish.

“Before you build your shelf, build your sanity.”

The Insight

IKEA has long empowered people to build their own homes — from MALM to BILLY — one Allen key turn at a time. Even the most iconic IKEA experience comes with that moment: you, the floor, a thousand pieces, and instructions that almost make sense. We leaned into that universal feeling—because sometimes, the real challenge isn’t the furniture… it’s the manual.

This project was developed as a speculative concept for IKEA. It is not an official campaign, but rather an exploration of brand voice, humour, and experiential storytelling.

Our Challenge

IKEA’s instruction manuals are iconic — clean, clever, and famously foolproof. They’re the reason anyone with an Allen key and mild determination can build a wardrobe. But what happens when we take that symbol of simplicity and throw it into chaos? For April Fools, we set out to sabotage the one thing everyone trusts. The goal? Turn an easy Sunday project into an emotional rollercoaster. Confused? Good.

That’s the point.

The Concept

This April Fools, we’re assembling confusion.

Introducing The Manual Manual — a perfectly disassembled set of IKEA instructions designed to frustrate, confuse, and amuse. Pages are out of order. Diagrams are cryptic. And the iconic stickman? Spiraling into full-blown panic. We turned the manual into the actual challenge — because why should building the product be the only headache? It’s not a product. It’s not even remotely helpful. It’s an experience. A joyful mess. A tribute to every meltdown, every misplaced screw, every moment you questioned your life choices while building a bookshelf. Assembling confusion, one lost Allen key at a time.

🇸🇪 Not Quite Swedish.Definitely Confused,

As part of this campaign, we created a series of totally made-up, English-sounding product names — all styled to feel vaguely Swedish, just like the ones you know (and sometimes mispronounce).

From Konfüzia to ïmdönn, these faux IKEA labels capture the spirit of the build: equal parts clever, chaotic, and kind of cathartic.

Because nothing says “authentic IKEA experience” like yelling “where’s the FJÜKLAR?!” mid-assembly.

Assembly Not Included.Emotional Support Is.

Even the most seasoned flat-pack veterans need emotional support now and then. That’s why we created two custom IKEA playlists — designed to keep you company when the manual makes no sense and the screws don’t match.

Whether you're staring at Step 1 or questioning your life at Step 7, we've got the soundtrack to help you power through (or gently fall apart).

Meatballs & Meltdowns

A slightly more dramatic mix for furniture fails, existential questions, and second servings. Scan. Breathe. Build. Meatballs optional, but recommended.

LÖ-FI assembly beats to cry and build to

Smooth, chill beats for when you’re only 40% sure you’re doing it right.
